Tensions were always high between the two Pauls, with senior yelling at junior for a good part of every episode and the love hate relationship is what kept many of the viewers glued to the TV sets aside from the gorgeous bikes.
The reason for their success might have been the same to their demise to be honest, since it was obvious that Paul Jr. is not going to put up with his dad for long after showing the world that he had grown into a real master bike builder.
